Buying the Water Jetter the Rental Counter Rents: General's JM-1450
Verdict $3,478.20 against the $115.00 a day El Paso Tool Rental charges for this exact model: break-even on the 31st rental day. The replacement hose is $371.20 and the warranty covers it only against a material flaw.
Prices are US list prices at the time of publication. Shipping, duties and local taxes vary by country — check with the manufacturer before ordering.
El Paso Tool Rental publishes a rate card for a drain jetter: $115.00 a day. The card names it. “JM-1450 Water Jetter,” brand General Pipe, UTIN 17176, in stock.
TEquipment sells that same JM-1450-A set for $3,478.20, with a cart button and a published stock line. Break-even is the 31st rental day.
The Machine
The JM-1450 is a 120-volt drain jetter. A triplex pump makes 1,500 PSI at 1.7 GPM off a 1½ hp sealed motor that pulls 13 amps through an inline GFCI. Water thrust drags the hose down the line; the jets wash the wall on the way back.
The set ships with a 150-foot × ¼” hose on a removable reel, a 30-foot × ⅛” hose, two nozzle sets and a cleaning tool. The manufacturer states what each hose reaches: the ¼” clears 2” through 4” lines out to 150 feet, the ⅛” clears 1½” and 2” lines out to 75.
It weighs 111 lb and stands 28” × 15” × 34”. Pull the reel off and the height drops to 14”. Vibra-pulse shakes the hose through tight bends without changing the flow rate.
No engine, no trailer, no tank: it wants a hose bib and a circuit.

A rental day is 3.31% of the purchase. The week costs 5 days and the month costs 12, so the counter gets cheaper per day exactly when it stops being occasional: a month is $1,380.00, or 39.68% of the machine. Four hours is $83.44, which is 72.56% of a whole day — two half-days run 1.45 times one full one.
What Breaks
The hose is the consumable, and the warranty says so in writing. General’s warranty page covers the machine one year, then lists the exceptions: “jet hoses and nozzles are subject to severe wear and are repaired or replaced within one-year only if a flaw in the material causes the breakage.” A 150JH1 is $371.20 — 10.67% of the machine, or 3.23 rental days. One replacement moves break-even from 31 days to 34. How many jobs a hose lasts is DATA NOT AVAILABLE FROM SOURCE, and it decides cost per use.
1.7 GPM is a flow ceiling, not a pressure one. The manufacturer’s own limit is 4-inch line. Anything bigger — a 6-inch main, a root-packed lateral — is a trailer jetter’s work, and 1,500 PSI does not change the gallons at the nozzle.
The counter’s page disclaims the counter’s own machine. El Paso’s listing carries “Product shown for illustrative purposes only. Specific models and brands may vary,” its specification table reads “No specifications are available for this item,” and the copy under it is the retailer’s marketing text word for word. The structured data names General Pipe and the JM-1450; the page below it reserves the right not to. The mini loader priced here three weeks ago had the opposite problem. This is the closest match any report here has had.
The circuit is tighter than the plug suggests. Thirteen amps at 120 volts is 1,560 watts and 86.67% of a 15-amp household circuit. Share it with a sump pump in an old building and the GFCI is the least of it.
Two sellers, $204.60 apart. The same set is $3,682.80 at the second one — 5.88% over the price anchored here — and that anchor is what makes break-even 31 days instead of 33. TEquipment’s own list price is $4,092.00, so the price used here is already a 15% house discount that nobody guarantees next week. Neither prices freight on a 111-lb machine: one listing says “Freight Shipping Only,” the other ships free only on a paid membership. DATA NOT AVAILABLE FROM SOURCE at both.
Renting has its own line items. El Paso’s rates exclude tax and jobsite delivery, a hold-over not extended in advance runs $35.00 a day on top — 30.43% of the day — and equipment returned dirty can draw a $50.00 cleaning fee, 0.43 of a rental day. A jetter comes back dirty.
Who Should Buy This
The owner who already owns the rest of the job. Saturday’s report was for the owner whose skid steer stands still in winter — the same person, one trade over. He has the truck and the customers. What he rents is the machine he needs on a schedule nobody controls.
The owner who already learned that the sales page is not the spec sheet. That was the lesson of the excavator two weeks ago. Here the rental page volunteers it: the model number is in the metadata and the disclaimer is in the body, and only one is a promise.
Not the owner who jets twice a year. The sewer camera settled at seven rental days against this same counter, and seven is reachable. Thirty-one is a count you keep on a calendar, not in your head. Under it, $115.00 is the right answer. One rate card from one Texas yard is the honest limit here.
Not for anyone reading this as a cousin of last month’s numbers. Three reports sit inside 10% of this price and none break even like this one: the log splitter at $3,569.00 prices per ton of force, the pellet mill at $3,695.00 is square at 9 tons, and the maple evaporator at $3,700.70 takes 1.11 seasons. Same money, four different units of payback.
The Stack
No affiliate links in this issue. When a link earns us a commission, we always say so. Verdicts are never for sale.
A calendar with thirty-one jetting days on it: the JM-1450-A at $3,478.20, 1,500 PSI, both hoses and both nozzle sets in the crate. The consumable: a spare 150JH1 hose at $371.20, which the warranty treats as wear.
A tighter line than the ⅛” hose likes: General’s stainless-braid 3/16” hose in 30, 50 and 75-foot lengths. Fewer than thirty-one days a year: El Paso publishes the whole card and the model number with it.
Two pages, one model number. That is the only reason this break-even is a comparison and not an estimate, and the rental counter is the one that printed it.
One machine. All the numbers.
